Diving for Dinner

A North Atlantic right whale dives astern of WHOI’s coastal vessel Tioga during a research cruise to study their feeding. Vulnerable to ship strikes and entanglement in fishing gear, the whales are among the world’s most endangered mammals, with about 350 remaining. WHOI biologists are working with several other organizations to seek ways to protect these massive yet vulnerable animals, with support from the WHOI Ocean Life Institute Right Whale Initiative and from the newly-formed Marine Mammal Center.
