  • The ship “monitors” the voice channel continuously. Persons ashore dial the ship per the above numbers. The GX and Sealink are USA based numbers.
  • All outgoing traffic is logged for record and billing purposes. All research-related traffic will be charged to the scientist’s project. All personal traffic must be charged on a credit card or be made collect. Incoming traffic is paid by the originator. The ship’s station will not accept collect or reverse charge calls.
  • Caution: communication via satellite can be expensive involving satellite use as well as land line charges. Telephone rates can exceed tens of dollars per minute. These rates apply to messages originating ashore as well as aboard ship.  Note:  do not call these numbers with a cell phone as the same charges apply.

HiSeasNet

HiSeasNet increases the ship's capability to send and receive data.  The following are some of the system's features and associated implications:

  • Email is transferred every 10 minutes.
  • Web browsing is permitted from the science network.
  • Email filters for incoming email messages will be set to the default size of 10K for all users.  The filter size can be increased if needed.
  • No incoming connections to the ship are allowed.
  • Please contact Laura Stolp (lstolp@whoi.edu) if you have questions about this communication tool.

  • The vessel can transmit on any Marine Band SSB frequency. At sea the vessel continuously monitors 2182 kHz SSB, Channels 13 and 16 VHF and Fleet Broadband.
  • E-mail: see the shipboard computing section for information on electronic mail. The ship’s Internet addresses are of the form username@atlantis.whoi.edu.
  • The Master is legally responsible for all communications emanating from the vessel. The Chief Scientist should discuss unique or extensive communication needs with the Master.
