WHOI Small Boat Operator Training Course

The WHOI small boat training course through Ocean Rescue System International is an entry level training appropriate for those who will be acting as a small vessel operator for WHOI small boats or crew on small boats utilized under the auspices of the Institution. The course provides fundamental training in boating knowledge and Skills. It reviews minimum requirements for safe operation of motorboats and includes a review of legal requirements, preparations, navigation, operations, emergency procedures, rescue, self-rescue, trailering, fire suppression, basic seamanship, as well as docking protocols along the WHOI pier. The course includes both classroom and on the water instruction. A Basic Small Boat Operations (Operations Level) certificate is presented at the end of the course.

The training complies with NFA standards of 1670 and 1006 for Operations Level Boat Operations and includes US Coast Guard approved components approved by Maine Maritime Academy, Castine Maine.

The course is offered once a year during the summer months. For other approved courses for the WHOI small boat program please refer to the Small Boat Management Program and Operators Manual.

In addition to the operations certificate, a current First Aid & CPR course must be maintained. For information on training and certification contact the EH&S office x3347.

These requirements also apply to bareboat charters. Operator certification must be appropriate to the vessel being operated.
