Nowhere to Go but Up

Nowhere to Go but Up

July 26, 2012

Earlier this month, MIT/WHOI Joint Program student Laura Stevens learned how to safely navigate ship rigging during the 10-day Jake Peirson Summer Cruise off Cape Cod. She joined fellow first-year Joint Program students for the annual trip, named in honor of the late WHOI educator A. Lawrence “Jake” Peirson. “The most exciting moments of the cruise for me were getting out on the bowsprit and going aloft in the foremast to furl sails,” Stevens said. Other highlights: celebrating her 23rd birthday in the North Atlantic, and watching several land-based firework displays from the ship’s deck on the Fourth of July.(Photo by Jaap Nienhuis, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
