Inclement weather rarely prevents the research vessel Atlantis from taking scientists to sea—and a rainy day did not deter members of the public from showing up to the Woods Hole Science Stroll this summer. Visitors toured Atlantis and learned about the human-occupied vehicle Alvin, which was on display on the ship’s fantail. The WHOI dock was one of about a dozen locations featured in the Science Stroll, all of which showcased the role of Woods Hole as an epicenter of oceanographic research. Two weeks later, Atlantis departed on a month-long cruise to the North Atlantic, where scientists are studying how ocean processes affect the atmosphere and climate.
