Lost and Found Buoy

WHOI technicians Jim Ryder (left) and Jeff Pietro (right) in the WHOI Mooring Operations and Engineering Group, and Kris Newhall (center) traveled to the most western side of Smith Point, Nantucket, to retrieve a right whale auto-detection buoy that had separated from its mooring after a storm and washed ashore. The mooring is one in a network in the Boston Harbor shipping lanes. They are designed to listen for whale calls and alert ships to slow down if whales are detected in the vicinity. The WHOI technicians coordinated with the Nantucket Department of Natural Resources because it was nesting season for piping plover and American oystercatchers.
