Ladd Thorne Indigenous Knowledge Program

A Collaborative Approach to Ocean Science

Ladd Thorne Indigenous Knowledge Program (IKP) at WHOI is dedicated to honoring and bridging Indigenous Knowledge Systems with Western science in marine and coastal research. By creating a space for mutual learning, the IKP acknowledges and respects the depth of Indigenous knowledge systems, allowing for an exchange that honors cultural traditions and scientific inquiry. We aim to work side by side, integrating diverse ways of knowing to enrich our understanding of marine ecosystems and promote sustainable stewardship of the oceans.

Key Program Components Include:

  • Collaborative Research: Partnering with Indigenous communities to co-create research plans.
  • Postdoctoral Fellowships: Offering unique opportunities for Indigenous scholars to engage in advanced research while contributing Indigenous perspectives to marine science.
  • Educational Outreach: Bringing Indigenous knowledge into public and academic discourse through workshops, seminars, and community engagement.
  • Student Programs: Including the Mashpee Wampanoag Preserving Our Homelands Camp for middle and high school students.
