Gotcha!

Gotcha!

October 19, 2018

Sam Levang, a graduate student in the MIT-WHOI Joint Program, appears to snatch a flying fish from the air, but no, this photo was staged. “Flying fish land on deck pretty regularly,” he said. “They would be awfully hard to catch!” Levang was aboard the research vessel Roger Revelle in September 2016, about 2,000 miles southeast of Hawaii, as part of the SPURS (Salinity Processes in the Upper ocean Regional Study) project. Levang’s research focuses on the pathways of ocean water circulating throughout the globe. Because oceans circulate heat, they have a significant role in regulating Earth’s climate.
