The More Things Change

Will Ostrom has seen ocean science change quite a bit in his 40-year career as a technician at WHOI. Here, he takes a break after helping load a REMUS docking station on R/V Connecticut. When he started as a 20 year-old in the WHOI Buoy Group, computers were still relatively uncommon in ocean science—researchers did their calculations with slide rules and made engineering drawings in pencil. As much as he has seen things change, however, one thing has remained consistent: “There’s an attitude at WHOI of solving big problems as a team. No one does it better than WHOI.”(Photo by Sean Whelan, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
