Roughing It, Greenland Style

Until early August, this is Ben Linhoff’s home in Greenland. Linhoff is a second-year graduate student in the MIT/WHOI Joint Program and is spending his second summer studying Leverett Glacier as it undergoes its seasonal melting. Linhoff is joined by a small team of scientists on a spit of land jutting out into the western edge of the Greenland Ice Sheet. Linhoff reports on his blog that most days they cook over a propane stove and collect data, but there are still Greenland-style treats to be had: “Without internet or cell phones, our contact with other people consist of a satellite phone, infrequent helicopter pilots, and a few visits to a nearby village, where we receive email, regular mail, and appreciate my favorite local delicacy—musk ox burgers.”(Photo by Ben Linhoff, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
