Internet & Satellite Connectivity
The vessel is outfitted to provide worldwide voice, data and internet communications. The Atlantis radio call sign is KAQP.
Internet Access while at Sea
- Shore internet access via a captive portal
- Wireless and LAN accessibility
- B&W and color printers and color plotters
- Do not plan to be able to download large files or stream any type of media. We also ask that users turn off any Cloud syncs, Bittorrent software, and any P2P software.
HiSeasNet
The HiSeasNet group (based out of the University of California San Diego) serves the UNOLS fleet by providing and maintaining satellite equipment. Visit their site to learn specifics about how they serve the fleet.
- Starlink is now available on all WHOI ships. If planning for a cruise, reach out to the R/V Science Coordinator to learn what bandwidths/allotments are available on the ship you are interested in.
General Communication Information
- The vessel can transmit on any Marine Band SSB frequency. At sea the vessel continuously monitors 2182 kHz SSB, Channels 13 and 16 VHF and Fleet Broadband.
- The Master is legally responsible for all communications emanating from the vessel.
- The Chief Scientist should discuss unique or extensive communication needs PRIOR to the cruise with the R/V Science Coordinator.
- The placing of amateur radio equipment on board the vessel is permitted but must be done with the approval of the Master and Ship Operations. Amateur operators and their equipment must be duly licensed and operated in compliance with FCC regulations.
- All antenna systems, either personal or scientific project related, must be placed in such a manner so as not to interfere with other equipment. Installation of antennas must be done with the approval Ship Operations and/or the Master.
