Thomas F. O’Neil

March 22, 2002

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution has received word of the death March 22, 2002, of former seaman Thomas F. O’Neil of Hull. He was 77. Tom joined the Institution staff in October 1970 as an able bodied seaman aboard Research Vessel Knorr and left the Institution in November 1980. Memorial services will be held at a later date. Donations in his memory may be made to Irish Mossing and Maritime Museum, 43 Cudworth Road, Scituate, MA 02066.

William Davis Taylor

The Institution has received word of the death of Honorary Member of the Corporation William Davis Taylor at his Brookline home February 19, 2002. He was 93. Mr. Taylor became a Member of the Corporation in 1970 and an Honorary Member in 1978. The cause of death was heart failure. Further details will be posted as available.

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution announces with great sorrow the death of Gloria Franklin, Administrative Professional in AOP&E, who passed away Saturday, January 19th, at her home in Falmouth after a short battle with brain cancer. Visiting hours are Monday, Jan. 21st from 4:00 – 7:00 pm at Chapman, Cole, & Gleason Funeral Home in Falmouth. The funeral is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 22nd, at 11:00 am at Elizabeth G. Parke Chapel in Oak Grove Cemetery on Jones Rd., Falmouth, with the burial to follow. A copy of the complete notice will be posted as available.

Chester W. Nimitz, Jr

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution announces with great sorrow the death January 2, 2002, of Honorary Trustee and Honorary Member of the Corporation Rear Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, Jr., USN (Ret.) at his home in Needham, MA. He was 86. In failing health, he and his wife of 63 years, Joan (Labern) Nimitz, 89, took their own lives in an apparent suicide pact.

Geoffrey G. Whitney

The Institution has received word of the death of Geoffrey G. Whitney Jr. of Woods Hole. He was 86. Geoff joined the Institution in 1951 as a research assistant in the Physical Oceanography Department working on the calibration and maintenance of deep sea reversing thermometers.. He retired in 1981 but continued to service thermometers for WHOI on a casual basis. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Further details will be posted as available.
