Brave New World

June 8, 2017

The bow of the U.S. Coast Guard icebreaker Healy plows a path through sea ice in the Beaufort Sea. Evidence of Earth’s changing climate is especially visible in the Arctic, making it an important focus of research. Each year several WHOI investigators make the difficult journey north, mostly during the summer, to study sea ice, ocean currents, and other phenomena that are either driving or affected by changes to the Arctic ecosystem. Some researchers even brave the far north in colder months, as a team did in 2016 to look for life beneath the ice-covered Arctic. (Photo by Chris Linder, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
