On May 13, 2013, the overhaul and upgrade of the submersible Alvin took a giant leap towards completion when the sub was transferred from the WHOI dock back to its support ship, R/V Atlantis. Alvin spent more than two years on land receiving a new personnel sphere, new command and control systems, and improved cameras and lighting. On Saturday, May 25, Atlantis will depart Woods Hole for the West Coast of North America and in the fall, Alvin will return to active duty supporting scientific exploration of the ocean and seafloor in advance of its 50th anniversary in 2014.(Photo by Tom Kleindinst, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
