Joseph L. Mayes

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution announces with great sorrow the death January 5, 2001 of Joseph Louis Mayes, an oiler aboard Research Vessel Knorr. Joe became ill aboard Knorr while at sea in the southern ocean 1,200 miles south of Africa and was airlifted to a hospital in Capetown, South Africa, where he was pronounced dead despite heroic efforts by the Knorr crew to keep him alive as they headed into port.

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution has received word of the death July 28, 2000 of retiree Harry H. Seibert at his home in Sebastian, Florida. He was 81.

Harry Seibert worked in Marine Operations at the Institution from 1951 until his retirement in June 1974, many of those years as Captain of Research Vessel Gosnold.

The Institution has received word of the death of Ruth Dixon Turner of Cambridge on Sunday, April 30, after a long illness. Ruth was a longtime adjunct scientist in the Biology Department. Visiting hours will be 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 4, at the Long Funeral Home, 1979 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge.
