Ocean Weather Station

Heavily instrumented buoys like this Coastal Surface Mooring (CSM) being recovered aboard the R/V Knorr, are part of the NSF-funded Pioneer Array, a network of moorings, gliders, and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) that allows scientists to study processes at the edge of the continental shelf south of New England. Meteorological instruments on the buoy provide detailed records of more than a dozen variables. Satellite systems transfer the data to shore to be shared with the research community where it will provide a new view of processes that make up the complex system linking waters along the New England continental shelf with the Atlantic Ocean.
