Charting a new course
April 13, 2009Eric Benway from WHOI Marine Operations (center) points out the proposed new alignment of channel markers in Great Harbor to Al Suchy, Director of Ship Operations at WHOI. A meeting was held on March 30, 2009, with National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), United States Coast Guard (USCG), Army Corps of Engineers, Steamship Authority, and WHOI. The channel markers are being changed due to the Great Channel dredging project that took place this past winter by NOAA, in anticipation of the arrival of their newest vessel, R/V Bigelow. Once all organizations agree on the new positions of channel markers, the USCG will make a formal announcement and begin a 30 day proposal period. After that, the USCG will re-position the selected buoys, possibly by summer of 2009.
