Alvin's New Quarters

Alvin’s New Quarters

January 22, 2011

At a public event in Woods Hole in October 2010, visitors get a close look at a mock-up of the new personnel sphere the research submarine Alvin will receive during extensive upgrades this year. Alvin’s most famous exploits include locating a lost hydrogen bomb in the Mediterranean Sea in 1966, exploring the first known hydrothermal vent sites in the 1970s, and surveying the wreck of RMS Titanic in 1986. Alvin’s final dives were chronicled during the Dive and Discover Expedition 13 in the Gulf of Mexico. The iconic sub is scheduled to return to duty in 2012.
