Derek Bergeron, relief chief mate for R/V Neil Armstrong, helped change wires while testing the main traction winch during the ship’s inaugural voyage from Anacortes, Washington to San Francisco in November. The main winch belowdecks and two smaller winches higher up on the ship permit the crew to deploy instruments more than 6 kilometers (3.5 miles) below the surface. Now students ages 13 to 18 have an opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes tour of Neil Armstrong and WHOI by entering the #SpeakForTheOcean video contest. Grand prize winners will receive a trip to Woods Hole to help celebrate the ship’s arrival later this spring.(Photo by Ken Kostel, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
