Ocean Observations
October 15, 2017Research vessel Neil Armstrong bosun Pete Liarikos keeps a watchful eye on small boat operations during recovery of a surface buoy at the Global Irminger Sea Array of the Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI). The OOI is a long-term, NSF-funded network of ocean sensor systems comprised of research moorings and autonomous underwater vehicles, envisioned to provide 25 years of sustained ocean measurements about climate variability, ocean circulation, and ecosystem dynamics. As bosun, Liarikos is responsible for safety of the deck crew during work at sea. (Photo by Rebecca Travis, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
