End of the Earth
March 28, 2015Ed “Catfish” Popowitz, bosun of R/V Atlantis stood on the bow of the ship as it sailed through the Straits of Magellan and passed the wreck of the Captain Leonidas. The Leonidas ran aground while carrying a cargo of sugar in 1968. Atlantis recently made the passage more successfully than the Leonidas on its way into and out of Punta Arenas, Chile, recently in preparation for deploying elements of the Southern Ocean array in the National Science Foundation’s Ocean Observatory Initiative.(Photo by Mark Anderson, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
