William Freund, Jr.

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution has received word of the death
November 9 of former employee William Freund, Jr. in Falmouth.  He
was 85.

Bill was born in New York City in 1922 to William F. and Janet L.
(Gunsberg) Freund and was raised on Long Island where he attended
Valley Stream High School.

Bill and his wife, Jean, moved to Falmouth from Boston and
rented a 250-year-old house on Sandwich Road in East Falmouth.  When they decided to build their dream home in Hatchville, they found inspiration in the
house on Sandwich Road, and carefully replicated it.

Bill and his wife moved to Falmouth after both of them were hired at
WHOI.  He began his career at the Institution in 1964 as a lead
computer
operator.  Through several promotions throughout his career, he
retired in 1985 as a senior research assistant.

Before moving to Falmouth, he spent nine years in Washington, DC, and had worked in San Francisco and Boston.

Bill was the husband of the late Jean (Dimitt) Freund.  He is
survived by his daughter, Ellen Ito; a brother Clifford Freund; and his
granddaughter, Amanda Ito.

A graveside service was held on November 14, at 1:00 p.m. at the Old East End Cemetery in Hatchville, Falmouth.
