Richard A. Machado

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution announces with great sorrow the death of retiree Richard A. Machado on March 1, at Mountain View Regional Medical Center in Las Cruces, NM. He was 82. 

Richard was born in Fall River, MA, on April 7, 1928, to Anthony and Caroline (Maher) Machado.  He received a B.A. in Education from Linda Vista Baptist Bible College in 1964.

Richard began working at WHOI in 1967 as a research assistant in the Physical Oceanography Department.  In 1969, he transferred to the Ocean Engineering Department. He retired from WHOI in 1974.

Richard served his country honorably in the United States Navy and served as chaplain for the U.S. Sea Cadets in Fall River. Richard was an aircraft mechanic until his retirement and has been a resident of Deming, NM, since May 30, 2005, having previously lived in Palm Bay, Florida.

Locally he served as pastor at SonShine Baptist Church but had to resign due to ill health.

Richard is survived by his wife Peggy and a brother Bruce.

A memorial service was hel on Saturday, March 5, at the Lighthouse Baptist Church with Pastor James Flores officiating. As were his wishes, cremation has taken place.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made in Richard’s memory to the American Lung Association of New Mexico or to the Diabetes Association.
