Paul C. Howland

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution announces with great sorrow the death of retiree Paul C. Howland on August 19, 2026.  He was 92.

Paul, a New Bedford native, was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and accomplished mariner. He lived a life deeply connected to the sea, to science, and to the people he loved.

Born in 1933 in New Bedford, Massachusetts, Paul was drawn to the water and spent much of his life on the ocean. He first went to sea in 1952 aboard the R/V Atlantis. He later served in the United States Army after being drafted and was stationed in Germany during his military service.

On May 26, 1962, Paul married Idella “Shortie” Gauthier of Uncasville, Connecticut. Together they built a life and family that remained at the center of Paul’s world.

Affectionately known as “The Captain,” he devoted an extraordinary 50 years to the WHOI, beginning his career in 1952 and retiring in 2002. Over the course of his remarkable career, he became a highly respected ship’s captain, commanding research vessels and working closely with scientists and crews on oceanographic expeditions. His years at sea took him around the world in support of scientific research and exploration, where his deep knowledge of the ocean, seamanship, and experience as a mariner made him an invaluable member of the WHOI community.

Paul was known not only for his abilities at sea, but for the people he worked with and the friendships he made throughout his long career. His 48 years with WHOI became an important part of his life and legacy.

Above all, Paul was devoted to his family. He and Idella shared more than five decades of marriage, creating a family and a lifetime of memories together.

Paul will be remembered for his love of the sea and the love he gave to his family and friends. He leaves behind a legacy that reaches far beyond the ships he captained and the miles of ocean he traveled. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

“The Captain” was predeceased by his beloved wife, Idella “Shortie” Howland, and longtime friend Roberta Clark. He is survived by his two sons, Mark Howland of Plymouth, Massachusetts, and Eben Howland and his wife Andrea of Bluffton, South Carolina; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services for Captain Howland will be private.
