Pamela E. Hindley

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution announces with great sorrow the death of retiree Pamela E. Hindley on September 8, following a brief illness.  She was 69.

Pamela was the daughter of Hazel (Patrick) Bowman, who died in 2010, and the stepdaughter of Richard Bowman of West Falmouth. Born in Boise, Idaho, she spent most of her life in Falmouth and was a 1962 graduate of Lawrence High School. There, she was a delegate with the Model UN, and a member of the Future Nurses of America. She also participated in the Pep Squad, the Lookout Club and was editor-in-chief of the Lawrencian.

Pamela attended Children’s Hospital School of Nursing. Her career began as a nurse.  She then began working at WHOI in 1970 as a Lab Assistant.  In 1974, she was promoted to Research Assistant I in Biology.  In 1976, she transferred to Research Assistant – Data Proc. I, in the Geology & Geophysics Department. She retired in 1980.

She also worked with her family at the Falmouth Grain Mill, the Falmouth Pet Center, and Falmouth Fish Market.

Pamela loved nature, especially birds, and the many cats she had over the years. She also loved gardening and had a passion for fishing. She was considered a gourmet cook by her family and friends.

She leaves her daughter, Ryanne Turcotte of Fort Drum, New York; her sisters, Leslie Lesko of Falmouth and Dawn Tolley of Chatham; her brother, Richard W. Bowman Jr. of Durham, North Carolina; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, William Parks Jr. Her husband, Robert J. Hindley, died in 1992.

A graveside remembrance was held on September 13, at 1:00 p.m., at the Church of the Messiah Cemetery, Church Street, Woods Hole.
