Michael Lee Spruill

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution announces with great sorrow the death of former employee Michael Lee Spruill on September 18, 2023.  He was 69.

Michael was born on April 3, 1954, in Grass Valley, California to Ceabo & Peggy Spruill. He lived his last 30 years in Jacksonville, FL, where he was a member of Spirit of Life Lutheran Church.

Michael began his career at WHOI in 2002 as an oiler on the R/V Atlantis.  In 2014, he became third assistant engineer/oiler.  He left WHOI in 2020.

Michael served in the United States Navy, was a member of the VFW, and American Legion.  He loved fishing, the Jacksonville Jaguars, and his chickens.

He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Margaret Spruill; son, Fred Wenk; grandchild, Makena Wenk; brother, Tony Spruill along with many other family and friends.  Per his wish, he will be cremated, and his cremated remains will be interred at the National Cemetery.
