Mary F. (Fontes) Andrews

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution announces with great sorrow the death of retiree Mary F. (Fontes) Andrews on September 7, at Falmouth Hospital.  She was 85.

Born in Bourne, MA, she was the daughter of Manuel G. and Julia (Gonsalves) Fontes. Raised and educated in East Falmouth, she lived most of her life there and raised her daughter there.

Mary began her career at WHOI in 1996 as a Housekeeper II in Meteor House. She retired in 2008.

She also worked as a housekeeper for the J.K. Lillys at their home in West Falmouth and in the housekeeping department at Falmouth Hospital.

Mary loved gardening, reading, and keeping house.

She leaves her daughter, Peggy A. Rose of Mashpee; her grandson, Derrick Chandler of New Hampshire; a great-grandson; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her siblings, Josepha Rose, Eleanor Perry, and Manuel G. Fontes Jr., and a daughter, Heidi Marie Andrews.

A funeral service will be held September 14 at 11:00 a.m., at Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 74 Algonquin Avenue, Mashpee. Burial will be private.
