John Gilder Foley

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution announces with great sorrow the sudden death of long-time WHOI volunteer, John Gilder Foley, on November 14, 2022.  He was 89.

John was born in Lexington, Kentucky to Emma (Layton) Foley and Timothy Bernard Foley, Sr. He graduated from Xavier University and earned a master’s degree at the University of Notre Dame.

John volunteered at WHOI for many years as a tour guide, Discovery Center docent, and projectionist at Peanut Butter Club.

John was predeceased by his three siblings. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Barbara Claire Foley. He also leaves four stepchildren along with their spouses and families: Karen O’Keefe, Kevin O’Keefe, Barbara O’Keefe-Shea, and Mary Beth Rutenis. John is survived by five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. John the Evangelist Church, 841 Shore Road at Barlows Landing, Pocasset, Mass, on Tuesday, November 29, 2022, at 10 a.m. A private reception will follow.
