Janet M. (Robinson) Johnson

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution announces with great sorrow the death of retiree Janet M. (Robinson) Johnson on July 21, in the loving presence of family, after a brief illness. She was 82.

Janet was a member of the Mendon High School class of 1950 and furthered her education at the University of Massachusetts, graduating in 1954.

Janet was a substitute teacher in the Milford elementary schools for many years. After moving to Falmouth with her husband, she began working at WHOI in 1985 as a secretary in the Geology and Geophysics Department. She was promoted a number of times throughout her career and retired in 1998 as a senior staff assistant.  She continued to work on a casual basis for several years.  She also volunteered as a tax aide in the AARP Tax Counseling for the Elderly program.  She loved walking and could often be seen on Surf Drive.

She was the wife of the late Philip M. Johnson who died in 1995. She leaves a sister, Shirley A. Niro of Uxbridge, Mass., and three children, Roberta Marsh Johnson and her husband Marcus Maineri of Sebastapol, CA; Jeffrey Scott Johnson and his fiancée Gretchen Kruysman of Yarmouth, ME; and Julie Johnson Badot and her husband Peter of Centerville, Mass.  She was the loving grandmother of Leigh, Ben, and Sally Johnson of Yarmouth, ME, and Jackson and Caroline Badot of Centerville, Mass.

A Celebration Service in honor of her life will be held on Saturday, July 25th at 10:00 a.m., at the Falmouth Congregational Church on the village green, followed immediately by a reception in the Fellowship Hall.  Burial will be private.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
