Dorothy B. Buchanan

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution announces with great sorrow the death of WHOI volunteer Dorothy B. Buchanan on January 20, at the Cape Cod Hospital, surrounded by her family.  She was 89.

Dorothy was born, raised, and educated in Weymouth, MA. She was a graduate of Weymouth High School, class of 1940. She married her husband George (Ken) in 1942. They enjoyed seventy years of marriage together.

Dorothy worked as a sales clerk in Buttners and Pendleton clothing stores.

Dorothy volunteered for many years at the WHOI Ocean Science Exhibit Center.  She also volunteered at the Antique and Classic Boat Shows. She was a member of the Osterville United Methodist Church.

Dorothy was an avid shopper, enjoyed the seashore but her greatest joy was spending time with her children, seven grandchildren, and four great-granddaughters.

She was the beloved wife of George K. Buchanan. Besides her husband, she is survived by four children, Georgia Buchanan of Mashpee; Kenneth L. and his wife Barbara of Marblehead, MA; Nancy J. DeCesare and her husband Roy of Brunswick, ME; and Cyndy O’Rourke and her husband Rick of Fairhaven. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Dorothy was predeceased by her sister Marion Whiting and her brother Charles Francis.

Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, January 23, from 4-7 p.m., in the Chapman, Cole, and Gleason Funeral Home, 74 Algonquin Avenue (at Rte. 151), Mashpee. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 24, at 10:30 a.m., in the funeral home. Burial will follow in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
