Daniel Philip Lane

Joint Program alumnus and WHOI Postdoctoral Investigator, Daniel Philip Lane, 29, died Wednesday, July 11, 2012 in Charleston, S.C.  Services were held this past Saturday at East Dillon Baptist Church.  His adviser, Jeff Donnelly, attended the services and reports on how much Phil was loved by his family, and how much he was respected as a brilliant student and scholar by his neighbors and friends in his small home town. 

Born in Dillon, SC, December 17, 1982, Phil was the son of Charles and Phyllis Bethea Lane. He attended Dillon Christian School and the Governor’s School of South Carolina. Phil received his BS at Cornell University and his PhD from the MIT/WHOI Joint Program in Paleoceanography in September 2011. Most recently he was a Postdoctoral Investigator at WHOI working with Jeff.

Survivors include his parents, Charles & Phyllis B. Lane of Dillon; sisters, Pam (Kenny) Laird of High Point, NC, and Paula Lane of Charleston; brother, Stephen (Karen) Lane of Dillon; grandmother, Eva Altman of Dillon; nephews, Eric Laird and Cooper Lane; and niece, Ashlyn Lane.

Jeff recommends that if folks would like to donate to something in Phil’s memory – his mother mentioned that she thought he would have appreciated donations to the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics. Online donations can be made at www.scgssm.org.
