Ernest Eldred Baker (Buddy)

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution announces with great sorrow the death of retiree Ernest Eldred Baker (Buddy) on June 23, 2023.  He was 94.

Buddy grew up in Quissett where he worked for the Quissett Boat Yard until he was drafted into the Korean War. When he came home, he married Ida Mae (Hilton) and they built a house in Woods Hole. Buddy went on to work for Green Pond Boatyard until it was sold, then worked with Howard Delano Builders. Buddy began his career at WHOI in 1975 as a carpenter. He was promoted several times and retired in 1994 as Carpenter Shop Supervisor.

Buddy delivered meals on wheels for many years until the age of 93. He loved helping others. He loved to drive around town in his 1929 Ford Model A. He belonged to the Mason’s, Shriner’s, Eastern Star, and was an active member of the Elk’s. Never would you see him without a smile.

He leaves his wife Ida Mae (Hilton), of 68 years; his has five children, Karen Colburn (AD), Glenn Baker, Janice Palmer (Bob), Celia Baker & Stewart Baker (Jane). Ten grandchildren, Robin, Katie, Allison, Tracy, Sumner, Asa, Leslie, Carly, Eloise, Howie; and eight great grandchildren.

Burial will be private. There will be a Celebration of Life at a later time.
