Alice (Broadbent) Todd

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution announces with great sorrow the death of retiree Alice (Broadbent) Todd on January 4 at StoneRidge Retirement Community in Mystic, CT.  She was 93.

Alice was the daughter of William and Alice (Harwood) Garne.  She was born in Darwin, Lancashire, England, and settled with her family in Cumberland, RI, at age 1.

Alice was born May 23, 1920. She received her diploma from Cumberland High School in Cumberland, RI, in 1938. She attended Kinyon’s Commercial School in Pawtucket, RI, for two years.  She met Irvine Broadbent in high school and they married in 1942.  They moved their family to Cedarville, Mass., in 1950, settling in Woods Hole, in 1954.

Alice began working at WHOI in 1960 as secretary to J.B. Hersey. In 1967, she was promoted to executive secretary to Bostwick Ketchum.  She retired in 1968.

After her husband Irvine died in 1967, she married Gordon F. Todd of Cumberland, RI, to whom she was married for 25 years.  After he passed, she moved to Mystic, CT, and had lived at the StoneRidge Retirement Community for more than eight years.

Alice was a member of the John Wesley United Methodist Church in Falmouth.  She also attended the Mystic Congregational Church and Calvary Church in Stonington, CT.

Alice was a member of the Eastern Star; social member of the Stonington Country Club, Woods Hole Golf Club, Falmouth Garden Club, and Woods Hole Woman’s Club.

At StoneRidge Retirement Community, she served as secretary of the welcoming committee and as a hostess at the newcomer’s table.

Her hobbies included refinishing furniture, hand braiding rugs, collecting antiques, playing piano and golf, gardening, and playing bridge.

She leaves her two children, Linda Hare of Glen Falls, NY, and Richard Broadbent of Mystic, CT; three grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Visiting hours are Friday, January 10, from 4-6 p.m., at the Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Mystic, CT.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 11, at 10:30 a.m., in the chapel at the Highland Memorial Park Cemetery, 1 Rhode Island Ave., Johnston, RI.

A memorial gathering will be held for StoneRidge Retirement Community residents.
