Woods Hole, Mass. – Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) is the recipient of four Communicator Awards. The Communicator Awards recognizes organizations committed to excellence, effectiveness, and innovation across all areas of communication. These awards are judged by leading and forward-thinking professionals from various disciplines of the visual arts dedicated to the evolving nature of traditional and interactive media.

The Award of Excellence, their highest honor, is given to entrants whose ability to communicate positions them as the best in the field. The Award of Distinction is presented to projects that exceed industry standards in quality and achievement.

WHOI’s Ocean: Impossible campaign received two Awards of Excellence in the Campaign-Non-Profit and General-Environmental & Sustainability categories. It also received an Award of Distinction in the Advertising Campaigns-Non-Profit category.

The Ocean: Impossible campaign invites individuals to become members and help support WHOI’s mission by highlighting research in the areas of climate change, vulnerable habitats, and the Ocean Twilight Zone. This spy themed campaign assigned individuals a “mission” to get involved while also highlighting the important technology behind the science.

Hope for Corals in Crisis also received an Award of Distinction in the General-Causes & Awareness category. A collaborative team at WHOI, led by Director and Producer Craig LaPlante, authored and produced this video as a pivotal component of WHOI’s ongoing efforts to spotlight innovative strategies and solutions for the coral reef crisis.

According to Craig LaPlante, WHOI’s Director of Digital Media, “We’re always looking for unique and creative ways to share WHOI’s mission. Our audience uses digital platforms to remain educated and informed and we need to meet them where they’re at. Our use of digital storytelling remains integral to our overall engagement strategy.”
