WHOI Symposium to Address the State of Worlds’ Fisheries

World leaders in fisheries oceanography will give an overview of the current state of the worlds’ fisheries in a symposium hosted by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) on Tuesday, August 25, 1998 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Redfield Auditorium on Water Street in Woods Hole. The scientific community of Woods Hole and greater Boston, as well as the interested public, are cordially invited to attend.

In the morning, Dr. Daniel Pauly of the University of British Columbia’s Fisheries Centre will offer an overview of the state of the worlds fisheries, followed by Professor Ransom A. Myers of Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia, who will address the collapse of fishing stocks worldwide. Dr. Andrew Solow, Director of the Marine Policy Center at WHOI, will present a view of fisheries science and management. Following the keynote speakers, a panel discussion will begin.

Organizers of the symposium include Dr. Laurence Madin, WHOI Biology Department Chairman; Michael Sissenwine, Director of the Fisheries Division of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Woods Hole; Dr. Peter Wiebe, Chairman of the GLOBEC (Global Ocean Ecosystems Dynamics) program and a senior scientist in WHOIÕs Biology Department; and Dr. John Steele, Scientist Emeritus in the Marine Policy Center, WHOI.
