Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Opens 2023 SXSW Conference With Looking to Our Ocean for Climate Solutions

Expanded climate change programming at Conference focuses on impacts and solutions
Austin, Texas (Friday, March 10, 2023) -- The South by Southwest (SXSW) Conference in Austin, Texas, brings together the worlds of technology, film, culture and more, with the goal of providing opportunities for discovery, learning, and creativity to an audience of global professionals. At the 2023 conference, Ken Buesseler, Senior scientist, marine chemist, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) will join Margaret Leinen, Director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego, and Susan Lozier, President American Geophysical Union (AGU) with one of the first sessions of the nine-day event: Looking to Our Ocean for Climate Solutions. This panel will be moderated by CNN science and space reporter Ashley Strickland.
The session takes place on Friday, March 10, 2023, 11 am – 12:30 pm CT at the Austin Marriott Downtown, Waller Ballroom AB.
Session Description:
As greenhouse gasses warm our planet, our ocean plays a significant role in regulating heat and absorbing carbon dioxide - absorbing a third of the carbon and more than 90% of the extra heat we add to our atmosphere. There are consequences to this, as scientists track warming temperatures, depleting oxygen zones, a more acidic ocean, and rising sea levels. The ocean can also be a potential solution if we can leverage the ocean’s existing ability to remove carbon dioxide.
Looking to our ocean for climate solutions will bring together leading ocean experts to discuss the ocean’s role in climate, the potential for ocean-based carbon dioxide removal, and a code of conduct for CO2 removal that could maximize collective societal and environmental benefit for our ocean planet.
This panel is a featured part of the Climate Change track, covering the consequences of soaring temperatures and rising oceans while also showcasing the most promising efforts on mitigating the effects of global warming.
In 2022, SXSW drew an estimated 250,000+ attendees across industry, start-ups, education, and non-profit sectors. In recent years, the conference has expanded its focus on climate change, with a programming track now dedicated to covering the consequences of soaring temperatures and rising oceans and showcasing the most promising efforts on mitigating the effects of global warming.
