James Swan

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution has received word of the death January 17, 2001 of James A. Swan, a former clerk in the WHOI Stockroom.

James Adam Swan was born March 22, 1916 and attended Quincy High School in Quincy, MA. He worked on a variety of naval and commercial ships, including oil tankers and cargo vessels for United Fruit Company, before joining G. Schirmer, Inc. of Boston as a stock clerk in 1946. In 1951 he joined Sears Roebuck & Company, working in the Service Department in Quincy until 1967, when he moved to Cape Cod and worked at Three Way Liquors in Falmouth. Jim joined the WHOI staff in September 1972 as a clerk in the Stockroom and remained with the group until 1978, when declining health forced him to leave the Institution. He retired in 1981.
