Roland G. Masse

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution has received word of the death November 24, 2001, of retiree Roland Masse. He was 76.

Roland G. Masse was born August 16, 1925. He served in the U.S Navy during World War II and spent two years at sea as a seaman and radio operator. He attended the American School in Chicago, receiving a diploma in 1954, and took many courses at the University of Maryland Overseas Campus through the years. Roland worked as a flight instructor in New Bedford, MA, from 1949 to 1953 before joining the U.S Air Force. He held positions at numerous aircraft maintenance shops between 1953 and 1962, and from 1963 to 1970 served in Maine, Japan and Oklahoma in various maintenance positions and a s a part-time manager of a hobby shop. Roland retired from the Air Force in 1970. He worked briefly as a parts manager for Mutual Truck Parts, Inc., at Otis Air Force Base in 1971 and as an electronics test inspector at Raytheon Company in North Dighton, MA, from 1971 to 1973 before joining the Institution staff in January 1974 as a stock clerk work,. In 1975 he became Property Clerk, and served in that position until he retired from WHOI in 1990. Further information will be posted when available.
