Charles Edward Spooner

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution has received word of the death of Charles Edward Spooner in East Harwich, MA, on April 21, 2008, after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was 82.

Chuck Spooner was born September 30, 1925 in Springfield, MA. He served in the Marine Corps and was a graduate of Tufts University.

Chuck joined the WHOI staff in February 1952 and worked as an assistant in the photo lab.  He was appointed head of photography in 1959 and retired in 1964.

He was the husband of the late Joanne Tassanari, who died in 1975.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Spooner, four sons, John Spooner, Chuck Spooner, Tom Spooner and Jim Spooner; a stepson, Jeffery Govin; a daughter, Donna Edgarton; a brother, Donald Jeffrey; three grandchildren; and two nieces.

A celebration of his life was held on May 3, at the Paddock Restaurant in Hyannis.  Memorial donations may be made in his name to the Parkinson’s Foundation Inc., 1501 NW 9th Ave., Bob Hope Road, Miami, FL 33136-1494.
