Brian O’Nuallain

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution announces with great sorrow
the death April 8, 2005 of Brian O’Nuallain of  Marine Operations
at his home in Falmouth. He was 43.

Brian was born April 6, 1962 in Dublin, Ireland.  He moved to the
United States in 1987 from Bray, County Wicklow, Ireland and lived in
Falmouth, where he worked at the Fishmonger’s Cafe in Woods Hole. He
joined the WHOI staff in November 1995 as a mess attendant on research
vessel Atlantis II and soon sailed as cook and relief steward on the research vessels Atlantis, Oceanus and Knorr, where he had worked in the steward’s department since 1999.

He is survived by his mother, Margaret Nolan, of Ireland; two brothers,
Patrick and Peter, of Ireland; a sister, Ann Hogan, also of Ireland; a
large extended family; and many friends. Proud of his Irish heritage,
he had changed his name from Nolan to the traditional form of Nolan,
O’Nuallain.

Visiting hours will be held Friday, April 15, from 5 to 7 p.m. at
Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 475 Main Street, Falmouth. A
memorial service will be held Saturday, April 16, at 2 p.m. at the
Sundial in Waterfront Park, Woods Hole. Everyone is welcome.

Brian O’Nuallain will be buried April 21 in St. Peter’s Cemetery in Bray,
Ireland following a memorial mass.  In lieu of flowers,
donations in his memory may be made to the Jimmy Gahan Charitable
Foundation, 26 Katherine Lee Bates Road, Falmouth, MA 02540.
