Howard R. Battee

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution announces with great sorrow the death of retiree Howard R. Battee on September 28, 2016 at JML Care Center in Falmouth.  He was 78.

Born in Mt. Kisco, New York, Howard graduated from New Rochelle High School in New York. He enlisted in the Air Force after high school, serving in Spain and Morocco.

In 1968, Howard moved to Falmouth with his two daughters after he married Janice Reis.

He began working at WHOI in 1970 as a buyer.  In 1974, he was promoted to senior buyer.  He left in 1977 and went on to work for the Neil Brown Company.

He leaves his daughters, Shelly Battee of Falmouth and Terry Thompson of East Falmouth; his nieces, Janet Kanvin of The Villages, Florida, and Amy Rutledge of Olive, New York; his nephew Bill Cook, also of Olive; and other extended family.

In addition to his wife Janice, he was predeceased by his granddaughter, Leslie Ann Burghardt.

A graveside service will be Friday, October 7, at 8:30 a.m., at St. Anthony’s Cemetery in East Falmouth. Refreshments will follow in the church basement.

Howard’s family would like to extend their most heartfelt thanks to the wonderful caregivers of JML Care Center and VNA Hospice who compassionately cared for Howard in his last months.
