Robert J. Corey

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution has received word of the death
February 24, 2007 of former employee Robert J. Corey in Falmouth. He
was 73.

Bob came to the Institution in 1981 as a dockworker.  During his
time at WHOI, he filled a number of different positions, among them
ordinary seaman on R/V Oceanus and R/V Atlantis II, security guard, and property agent.  He took a leave of absence in 1991 and ended his employment in 1993.

Bob was born in Cambridge, MA, and was raised in Belmont. He graduated
from Belmont High and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where
he was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He served in the U.S.
Army in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. After 22 years of service he
retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1978. He later went to the
University of Rhode Island and studied Marine Technology. He also
established Falmouth Sports Video and enjoyed filming Falmouth Youth
Sports games and producing scouting tapes for young athletes.

Survivors include his beloved wife Christine S. (Lindsey) Corey, to
whom he was married for 47 years. He was the father of three daughters,
Linda Gittle of Texas, Diane Corey and Gail Corey of Hatchville, sister
Virginia Edgell of Virginia, three grandchildren, Jeffrey and Megan
Gittle, and Corey Martin. He also leaves six nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be Thursday, March 1, from 5-8 p.m. in Chapman,
Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 584 Route 28A, West Falmouth, MA. A
funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, March 2, at St.
Barnabas Memorial Church, 91 Main St., Falmouth, MA.

A private burial will be in the V.A. National Cemetery of Massachusetts in Bourne.
