Harlow Grosvenor Farmer

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution has received word of the death
January 31, 2006 of former employee Harlow Grosvenor Farmer. He was 83.

Harlow started at the Institution in 1950 as a research associate in
hydraulics.  He took a leave of absence in 1960 and ended his
employment in 1964.

He was born and raised in Watertown, N.Y. After serving in the Army
during World War II, he graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology, where he also received a master’s degree in civil
engineering, in 1950. He received a doctorate in physical oceanography
from the University of Washington in the late 1960s.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Sue Shafer Farmer of Annapolis;
two sons, Harlow G. Farmer III of Houston and John C. Farmer of
Boulder, Colo.; a daughter, Emily O. Farmer of Arlington, Mass.; a
brother; a sister; and three grandchildren.
