Paul C. Mangelsdorf Jr.
The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution announces with great sorrow the death of Paul C. Mangelsdorf Jr., on Friday, March 6, of dementia at White Horse Village in Newtown Square, PA. He was 90.
Paul conducted research at WHOI for many summers.
He was born in New Haven, CT, to Paul C. Mangelsdorf and Helen (Parker) Mangelsdorf. The family lived in College Station, TX, moving to Newton, Mass., when he was in high school. He earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics with high honors from Swarthmore College in 1949 and a doctorate in chemical physics from Harvard University.
At Swarthmore College, he met Mary Burnside. They were married for more that 65 years.
Paul enlisted in the US Army in 1943 and served as a cryptanalyst stationed in England. When the war ended, he was sent to Germany to participate in the US Strategic Bombing Survey, which assessed the results of the Allied bombing campaign during World War II.
In 1960, he bean working at WHOI, leaving a year later for Swarthmore College, where for 29 years, he taught physics. He returned to Woods Hole in summers and during sabbaticals as a research associate in physical chemistry, then a visiting investigator and adjunct scientist, studying the chemical composition of oceans and ocean sediments and going on cruises across the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans, as well as up the Amazon River.
He was also known for accompanying Bill McCleish’s bagpipes on his trumpet as they welcomed returning WHOI vessels to the dock.
Paul and his wife became members of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) in the 1950s and he remained a member of West Falmouth Meeting for the rest of his life.
Paul liked classical and Dixieland jazz. He played trumpet in the Falmouth Town Band.
In addition to his wife, he leaves four children, Helen Mangelsdorf and her husband Roman Tybinko of Philadelphia, PA; Paul Mangelsdorf III and his wife Laurice Mangelsdorf of Atlanta, GA; Sarah Mangelsdorf and her husband Karl Rosengren of Madison, WI; Martha Mangelsdorf and her husband Roy Peabody of Boston, Mass.; one brother, Clark Mangelsdorf of Latrobe, PA; five grandchildren, and nine nieces and nephews.
A Friends memorial service is planned for Sunday, July 5, at 12:30 p.m., at the West Falmouth Friends Meeting, 574 West Falmouth Highway.
