Claire Selvitelli

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution announces with great sorrow the death of volunteer Claire Selvitelli on July 13, at Falmouth Hospital.  She was 79.

Born, raised, and educated in Boston, Claire graduated from Mission High School in Roxbury and Emmanuel College with a bachelor’s degree in history. Claire taught history at South Middle School in Waltham until her retirement. She and her husband Fran were devoted volunteers at the WHOI Peanut Butter Club. Claire was also a member of the Winchester Young Woman’s Club. Claire was an avid reader and enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Besides her husband Fran of 56 years, Claire is survived by her three sons Paul F. Selvitelli and his wife Romona of Narragansett, RI; David M. Selvitelli and his wife Ann of Suffield, CT; James A. Selvitelli and his wife Sandra of Charleston, SC; and a daughter Karen M. Hanlon and her husband Edward of Holliston, Mass. She was grandmother to Eddie and Kiara Hanlon; Nicholas, Hope, and Maeve Selviltelli; and Kate and Pierce Selvitelli. She is also survived by a sister Elaine McDonald and her husband Robert of Needham, Mass; and three nephews.

A funeral Mass was celebrated on Wednesday, July 16, at St. Elizabeth Seton Church, 481 Quaker Road, North Falmouth. Burial will follow in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Connery Avenue, Bourne.
