Eugene B. Fortes

The Woods Hole Oceanograpahic Institution has received word of the
death August 19, 2006 of former marine crew member Eugene B. Fortes. He
was 79.

Eugene B. Fortes was born February 17, 1927 in Tewksbury, Mass., and
served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1944 to 1969, achieving the rank
of  senior chief boatswain’s mate.  He worked as a rigger and
mechanic at General Dynamics Ship Building in Quincy, Mass. from 1969
to 1972, when he joined the Institution staff as an able bodied seaman
aboard research vessel Chain.  He later worked on the Knorr, Lulu and Atlantis II before leaving the Institution in 1983.
