Jean Walker

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution announces with great sorrow the death of retiree Jean Walker on September 8, at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg, VA, after a brief illness. She was 95.

Jean was born in Boston on September 15, 1916. She was the daughter of the late Joel Scott and Louise (Murray) Densmore, and mother of the late Robert H. Walker Jr.  Jean was raised in Woods Hole and lived in Falmouth for the past 30 years.

Jean began her career at WHOI in 1955 as a bottle washer and house cleaner.  In 1958 she became a lab assistant.  In 1968 she became a machine operator and in 1974 a printer’s assistant.  In 1979 she was promoted to printer and retired in 1981.

She is survived by two sons, Scott D. Walker of Fredericksburg, VA, and Ronald A. Walker of VA. She also leaves her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be from 5 -7 p.m., on Friday, September 14, at Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 475 Main Street, Falmouth Center. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., on Saturday, September 15, her 96th birthday, at the Church of the Messiah, Church Street, Woods Hole. Burial will follow at the Churchyard.
