Robert J. Wichterman

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution announces
with great sorrow
the death March 9, 2006 of retiree Robert J. Wichterman at  Mary
McCarthy Hospice House in Sandwich after a long illness.  He was
70.

Robert John Wichterman was born February 8, 1936 in Philadelphia, where
he was raised and attended school.  He moved to Falmouth more than
forty years ago, working at Falmouth Hospital as a senior porter from
1964 to 1973.

Bob joined the WHOI staff in November 1970 as a part-time cleaner on a
casual basis while also working at Falmouth Hospital.  He was
promoted to services assistant at WHOI in September 1977, transferring
a month later to driver in Shipping & Receiving. He was named a
Distribution Assistant in January 1998 and was promoted to Senior
Distribution Assistant, working in Receiving and Mail Services, in
December 2001. Bob retired from the Institution in December 2002.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret (Buttner) Wichterman of East
Falmouth, MA; three sons, James A. Wichterman of Roslindale, MA, Matthew J.
Wichterman of Destin, FL, and Brian J. Wichterman of Ft. Lauderdale,
FL; a sister, Susan Wichterman of Mexico; and one grandson.

Visitation is from 9:00 to 9:45 a.m. on Tuesday, March 14, at the
Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 475 Main Street, Falmouth. A
funeral mass will follow at 10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Church next to
the funeral home.  Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Falmouth.
