In-port entertainment? A dockside test of a brand-new piece of oceanographic equipment takes place next to a massive cruise ship in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. Aboard R/V Oceanus, WHOI scientist David Fratantoni (left) watches as research specialist Frank Bahr (holding the line) and research associate Ben Hodges (with pole) bring the the bright yellow “ScanFish II” up from a test immersion. The new undulating towed vehicle, which joins WHOI’s complement of sensors and samplers, flies up and down behind the moving ship measuring physical and biological water properties between the surface and a depth of several hundred meters. The cruise, research, and new ScanFish were funded by King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, with whom WHOI has a collaborative research partnership.
