Salps are transparent animals that eat phytoplankton by filtering it from the water with a mucus net inside their barrel-shaped bodies. They can be single animals, called solitaries, or live in chains called aggregates. (Photo by Laurence Madin, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
